There are five western pine species in British Columbia, three of which are of commercial importance: small dry pine, western white pine and dryland pine.

The wood is light in color, ranging from cream to yellow to light reddish-brown, with a straight, non-permeable texture and a fine and uniform texture.

These tree species are light in weight, with moderate to medium strength and hardness. The wood dries quickly, with small gauge movement and possible small diameter cracks.
